Surprising and expected Music genre popularity trends
Music is a universal language, but what is considered music varies from person to person and country to country. Despite some regional differences in the data, the works of classical composers, rock stars, and pop divas have been heard in every corner of the world.
Hip–hop and R&B music originated in the United States, but more South Africans said they were streaming these genres than Americans. 59 percent of South African respondents said they listened to hip–hop, rap, and similar types of music compared to 34 percent in the U.S. Mexico and India also had higher numbers of hip–hop listeners than the U.S., with the sum of all genres listened to by respondents in these countries reaching nearly 300 percent.
In European and Anglophone countries, the average respondent listened to around two genres. South Korea had the lowest number of genres listened to, with 1.8 genres per respondent. Pop music was the most popular genre in South Korea, with 51 percent of respondents saying they listened to it. China had even more pop fans at 53 percent. Mexico (51 percent), the U.S. (47 percent), and Brazil (45 percent) were the countries where people preferred to rock out.
